Leão Inherits the Famous 7 as Portugal Reshapes for Denmark
Ronaldo’s exit changes the spotlight
Portugal’s squad for Thursday’s Nations League match in Denmark arrived with one major headline: Cristiano Ronaldo is out, and Rafael Leão will wear the No. 7 shirt. The list was released after Ronaldo left the national-team camp, turning a routine squad update into a much bigger story.
For nearly 20 years, Portugal’s No. 7 has been tied to Ronaldo’s identity. The number became part of his global brand, so seeing it assigned to Leão for this match carries more weight than an ordinary shirt swap.
Leão usually plays for Portugal in No. 17, but against Denmark he steps into the number most closely associated with Ronaldo’s international career.
What changed in the squad
- Rafael Leão switches from No. 17 to No. 7.
- Fábio Silva takes over the open No. 17 shirt and is included in the matchday squad.
- Bruno Fernandes returns after missing the Norway match because of injury.
- Francisco Conceição remains unavailable while continuing his recovery.
Why the number switch happened
The change was straightforward rather than symbolic in a formal sense. Nations League rules require each team to submit a 23-man match list for every league-stage game, with each player assigned a number from 1 to 23.
Once Ronaldo was removed from the Denmark squad, the No. 7 shirt became available, and Leão was the player who received it.
Ronaldo’s departure raises bigger questions
Ronaldo left camp on Wednesday, September 30, after Jorge Jesus held a news conference and after a discussion with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença. He said he would share his reasons later.
The background had already become tense. Ronaldo was benched in Portugal’s 2-1 win over Norway, then trained separately even though he was fit. Jesus admitted the forward was unhappy with the decision, but he denied that the situation had become a true conflict.
The timing, just before kickoff in Copenhagen, has fueled plenty of speculation, and Portugal’s prime minister has reportedly become involved. As of October 1, the federation has not announced any retirement decision, and Ronaldo had already suggested earlier this year that the 2026/27 season could be his last.
